How Much Will My Case Cost?

Lisa works as a private solicitor, this means she charges for the work she does.

Charges may include:
·     her basic fee
·     expenses
·     disbursements – for example costs for a medical report, a drug and alcohol test or an interpreter
·     any other fees – for example court fees or a barrister

Lisa has three different options for you to consider

Pay As You Go

This is a traditional way of paying for a case. The more Lisa does for you the more it costs.

Lisa has an hourly rate,  but actually it builds up in units of 6 minutes (known as “a unit”). The reason for this is that it is easier to monitor costs building up in hours that are divisible by 10.

In order to take on your case on an hourly rate you will be asked to pay a 'retainer,' this is an amount you pay in advance. You will get a detailed account of all the costs of your case. Lisa will talk to you about the retainer and how the amount you pay will be managed.

Fixed Fee

A fixed fee is exactly what it says, it is an amount you pay in advance for  the work on your case.

It does not include hearings. This is because it is not known at the beginning of the case how many hearings you will have.

The fixed fee won't cover expenses, disbursements or any fees. These will be discussed and agreed with you before any payment is due.

To take your case on under a fixed fee you will pay in advance for the agreed amount and also pay for any disbursements or hearings before they happen.

Pay For Specific Things

This is a relatively new way for solicitors to work.

Most cases are able to be split into sections.

You decide which sections you want Lisa to advise you on or specific things you would like her to complete on your behalf. You will be responsible for the 'case management'.

In order to take your case on in this way you will pay for the section or specific item before it is started.
